Three students aspire for Limca Book of World Records at Neyveli Township

While R. Sunil Ashish is vigorously painting, S. Ashika Rith and M. Thivakaran, other contenders for the Limca Book of World Records, watch his progress at Jawahar Higher Secondary School (CBSE) at Neyveli Township.

CUDDALORE:

Three students of Jawahar Higher Secondary School (CBSE) at Neyveli Township – S. Ashika Rith, M. Thivakaran and R. Sunil Ashish – have embarked upon a marathon endeavour to find a niche in the Limca Book of World Records.

It is a real test for their endurance as well as a challenge to their talent in the chosen fields – for Ashika Rith drawing sketches of illustrious personalities has been a passion; for Thivakaran photography a fascination and for Sunil Ashish painting an obsession. With the backing of Principal N. Yasodha and art teachers, the trio has been emboldened to try a hand at the records. The Principal told The Hindu that the school has given them an opportunity to bring to the fore their innate skills.

Ashika Rith has deftly drawn as many as 102 sketches of personalities such as A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Albert Einstein, music director Ilayaraja, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and NLC Chairman-cum-Managing Director A.R. Ansari, within 44 hours. What is astonishing about Ashika is that she has completed the drawings with charcoal and pencil with utmost clarity and without any reference. She said that this is possible because she had committed to memory the profiles of all of them through the “mind mapping technique.”

Thivakaran inherited the taste for photography from his father K.Meenakshisundaram, employed in Neyveli Mine-II. At 6 a.m. on June 4 he set out with his Nikon D 90 camera to capture the greenery in the Neyveli Township and by 6 p.m. he clicked as many as 1,555 snaps. His photographs have thus captured the landscape of Neyveli Township. Thivakaran nurses a desire to take up cinematography after schooling. Sunil Ashish has been continuously wielding brushes soaked in water colours on a long strip of art paper, with 30-minute break for every three hours of non-stop painting, for almost three days. He is extraordinarily talented in painting landscapes, including plantations, meadows, mountains and valleys.

From 6 a.m. on June 9 to 10 p.m. on June 11, Sunil Ashish has painted over 500 metres of canvas. The Principal said that the event was organized to coincide with World Environment Dayto propagate awareness about environment protection. The documented proceedings would be sent to the organizers of the Limca Book of World Records for assessment. It would take one year to know the results.
