Since the police department has been given the freedom to act, the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu remains well maintained, said M.R.K. Panneerselvam, Health Minister.
He was speaking at a function held on the New Town Police Station premises here where he inaugurated the police quarters built at a cost of Rs 4.67 crore on Thursday. The police department had a free hand in recruitment, promotion and transfer and could not be influenced from any quarters. He pointed out that Chief Minister Karunanidhi was quite considerate in providing the required facilities to the police. The Minister appreciated the role played by District Collector P.Seetharaman and Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis in handling the situation arising out of the labour dispute in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation.
Concern over road accidents
Voicing concern over the increasing number of road accidents, the Minister said that last year 359 persons were killed and this year so far 325 persons died in the district. He called upon the people to cooperate with the police to avert accidents. Mr Seetharaman, Deputy Inspector General of Police E.Ma.Masanamuthu, Mr Ashwin Kotnis, G.Ayyappan, MLA, and T.Thangarasu, Municipal Chairman, also spoke.
