Collector P. Seetharaman addressing officials at the meeting in Cuddalore

CUDDALORE:

Even as northeast monsoon is getting vigorous over the coastal district of Cuddalore, the administrative machinery has been geared up for flood management.

Addressing a disaster management review meeting held here on Saturday, Collector P. Seetharaman directed officials to keep open 21 cyclone shelters in the coastal areas and also stack them with essential supplies and drinking water. The officials were instructed to create awareness among those people living in the low-level areas about the possible flood threats and keep them on alert to move to places of safety at short notice.

Public Works Department officials were asked to keep sand bags and casuarina logs ready at 16 highly vulnerable places to plug any breach in water sources. As many as 272 road workers of the Highways Department had been deployed to attend to any exigency such as clearing uprooted trees that might block road traffic. Mr. Seetharaman said that fire and rescue personnel were kept ready. The Health Department was prepared to deal with the outbreak of any water-borne disease. Arrangements were also put in place to bale out stagnant rainwater.
