Remedial teaching should be made an integral part of curriculum - Said Y.N.Sridhar, Mysore University

           Remedial teaching should be made an integral part of the curriculum from the primary to the college level. In this endeavour the role of the students, teachers and parents is equally important, said Y.N.Sridhar, Professor of Education, Mysore University.

             He was delivering the special address at the University Grants Commission-sponsored national seminar on “Key concerns and issues in remedial teaching” organised under the aegis of the Department of Education of Annamalai University at Chidambaram on Monday.

          Mr. Sridhar said that a strong foundation ought to be laid for remedial teaching at the primary level itself and if there are lapses on this score the carry-over effect would be felt at the subsequent secondary, high school and higher education levels. He said that no stigma need be attached to remedial teaching as it was in vogue even in the developed countries such as the US and Canada. Remedial teaching was meant for those students whose causes for deficiency in learning was extrinsic such as poverty and insufficient accessibility to resources, and, not intrinsic as in the case of differently-abled children.

           Mr. Sridhar said that some educators preferred to use the term “developmental education” instead of “remedial education.” He underscored the point that since “remedy” was a medical lexicon there should be proper diagnosis before proceeding with this type of teaching. He said that since the aptitude and sociological background would vary from student to student, the concept of remedial teaching could not be universally applied but should be tailor-made to suit the individual needs.

           Vice-Chancellor M.Ramanathan decried the attitude of the teachers to look down upon those students who did not fare well in studies. They used to avoid students getting lower grades or trouble-makers. Dr Ramanathan said that marks should not be the sole criterion for judging the knowledge and capacity level of students, as even the poor performers in the classes might turn out to be big achievers later. Instead of concentrating on didactic teaching they should try out the activity based teaching methodology, Dr Ramanathan said.
