Chidambaram town set for facelift

beautification plans: Collector P. Seetharaman inspecting the main thoroughfares at Chidambaram.

CUDDALORE:

Pavement shops on all four streets surrounding the Natarajar temple at Chidambaram will be cleared. The environment around the temple will be kept spick and span by clearing garbage at regular intervals, according to Collector P. Seetharaman.

After inspecting the Chidambaram town along with officials on Thursday, he told reporters that the town would be free of stray cattle and sheep. If such animals are found wandering, owners would be fined at the rate of Rs. 100 per animal a day. Traders' association had extended support for removing the pavement shops around the temple and the officials had been asked to complete the task before Sunday, he said. For keeping the entire town clean, dustbins costing Rs. 2.3 lakh would be provided in every ward under the ‘Namakku Naame Thittam.'

Besides these, 13 dumper bins - large size dustbins - would also be procured at a cost of Rs. 50,000 each. Parking lots had been clearly demarcated for tourist vehicles on East Street, West Street and North Street, Mr. Seetharaman said. The municipality would levy fine on vehicles parked in ‘no-parking' zone as follows: Rs. 20 for two-wheeler; Rs. 40 for car; Rs. 50 for van; and Rs. 100 for bus. Mr. Seetharaman said that total fund allocation of Rs. 3.15 crore had been made for the construction of roads.

These included West Street (Rs. 65 lakh), Venugopal Road (Rs. 60 lakh), Chidambaram-Sivapuri- Kavarapattu road (Rs. 55 lakh), and, Chidambaram-Thandavarayanpettai road (Rs. 1.35 crore). Road-laying works would begin in September, he said. The municipality would put up 33 streetlights at a total cost of Rs. 27.65 lakh as follows: on the Chidambaram flyover (14), Kothangudi (7) and Annamalai Nagar (22). The autorickshaw stand on the left side of the flyover would be moved further down.

Traffic intersection

A traffic intersection would be built at the flyover-bus stand junction at a cost of Rs. 75 lakh. These measures had been contemplated to ease traffic congestion and give a facelift to the renowned temple town, Mr. Seetharaman said. District Revenue Officer S. Natarajan, Deputy Superintendent of Police Moovendan, Project Officer (DRDA) Rajashri, municipal chairman Fouzia Begum, and Public Relations Officer S.Muthiah were present.
