Fire station in Cudalore has been provided with new gadgets.
CUDDALORE:
As part of the modernisation programme, the Fire Service and Rescue Department here has been provided with at least half a dozen new equipment to improve the efficiency-level of the personnel and to handle the victims in a much safer manner, according to Station Officer S.Kumar.
Mr. Kumar told The Hindu that earlier for want of right kind to tools the personnel faced difficulties in the rescue operations. Therefore, to remove the shortcomings, Director of Fire and Rescue Service R. Nataraj had started providing the Fire Stations in the districts with modern equipment. Notable among the new acquisitions was the “Inflatable tower” which could be blown up with the help of an air compressor to a height of 15 ft. At the top of it would be perched a 500-volts halogen lamp powered either by petrol or diesel which would light up an area of 30-ft diameter.
This would be extremely useful to the personnel when the electricity connection was snapped either by cyclone or other disasters.Electric shock-proof shoes were another new acquisition which would protect the personnel even if they step on live wire, of both low tension and high tension types, with an energy output of up to 10,000 volts. Another important gadget was the “collapsible stretcher” that would facilitate careful handling of the victims who suffered fractures in the spinal cord or the neck. Since the regular stretcher was of rigid type the patients would be tossed about while the personnel were evacuating them swiftly. Whereas, the new stretcher would hold the victims in a firm position without allowing even the slightest movement, thereby improving the comfort level of the victims and without aggravating the physical problem. Mr. Kumar further said that in a fire accident the common problem faced was fumes and the resultant suffocation.
Therefore, to help those who were caught in a building on fire the department had now acquired the “personal oxygen system” that contained three small cylinders, each filled with 70 litres of compressed oxygen. The system would enable victims to breathe easy and to increase the survival rate. Mr Kumar noted that since the personnel wearing regular khaki suit could not be easily located in a place engulfed with smoke, now, a new suit with reflector was being provided. Another simple mechanism was the “rescue pulley machine” that could segregate the badly damaged vehicles without much effort. All these would be fitted in an “emergency rescue tender,” a new vehicle that would soon reach Cuddalore.
Mr. Kumar also stated that to cope with the stressful situation yoga was also being taught to the personnel. All the 246 personnel posted at various fire stations in the district were being trained in handling the new apparatus, he added.
