Improving road travel: Collector P Seetharaman and Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis on a campaign at Vriddhachalam

CUDDALORE:

The Cuddalore district administration has embarked upon a campaign to decongest major roads and tourist spots. It is enlisting the support of traders, commercial establishments, petty shop owners and pavement vendors.

A retinue of officials and security personnel led by Collector P. Seetharaman, Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis and District Revenue Officer S. Natarajan went through the main thoroughfares and commercial areas at Bhuvanagiri, Sethiathope, Vadalur and Vriddhachalam to spread the message that congestion was the major cause of accidents. If free vehicular movement was ensured, it would avert accidents and save many lives.

As Cuddalore formed part of important tourist destinations and temple circuit, there used to be heavy flow of traffic. However, the roads were narrow, both at entry and exit points, and it was further narrowed down by unauthorised shops. Long-distance travellers would lose travel time owing to bottlenecks. This might lead to over-speeding and accidents, claiming lives. Mr. Seetharaman said shops set up on public property would affect pedestrian movement. The district administration had proposed to create awareness of the hazards of such unwanted structures among people. The Collector called upon the local bodies to prepare proposals for widening roads and giving facelift to important junctions. The official entourage visited places such as Bhuvanagiri, Sethiathope, Vadalur and Vriddhachalam.
