Winners of state-level swimming competition in Cuddalore.

Cuddalore students proved their mettle in the State-level swimming competitions held in Thanjavur on October 15 by bagging the most number of medals. They ended with a tally of 54 medals, including 25 gold, 18 silver and 11 bronze.
In the Under-6 category, R.Subash Chander of A.R.L.M. School made a clean sweep with three gold and one silver, while J.Davis Niranjan of C.K. School of Practical Knowledge bagged three gold in the Under-7 category, V.Koteeswari of St. Mary's Matriculation Higher Secondary School won two gold and two silver in Under-8 category and K.Y. Rukshana of Blessed Mother Teresa School obtained two gold and two silver in Under-12 category.
District Swimming Coach S. Aruna told The Hindu that there was a lot more potential in Cuddalore and if tapped properly they would even shine in State and national championships. As many as 15 teams, comprising a total of 350 students, participated in the event. He led a contingent of 30 swimmers from Cuddalore. Mr. Aruna said that the surprising thing about the students was none of them belonged to the fishermen community.
It disproved the notion that Cuddalore being a coastal district it was but natural to get so many medal winners. The coach emphatically said that the students belonged to various communities and they took to swimming out of their own interest and put in a lot of effort.
They were trained in four types of strokes:
breast, back, butterfly and free style. Once they hit the water it would take about two months for the students to learn the basics. Then, gradually they were taught the technique of acquiring speed and endurance. Initially, they would participate in local competitions and gradually progress to higher-level competitions.
Once the students overcome fear, they would show their full potential to emerge as ace swimmers. Mr. Aruna further said that as of now the boys undergoing training outnumbered girls and hoped that in course of time more number of girls would also participate in swimming competitions.
