Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women Sarguna Pandian has embarked upon a State-wide tour to review the cases relating to violence against women. She spoke to presspersons after holding discussions with officials in connections with issues pertaining to women here on Thursday.
Ms. Pandian said the Violence Against Women Act had come in handy to get justice to aggrieved women. However, cases were pending for over five years and, to render speedy justice to women, she had been directing the officials to dispose of the cases received by the Commission within 90 days. From 2007 to 2009, the Commission had received a total of 4,523 petitions highlighting atrocities against women. These included dowry harassment, non-payment of alimony, desertion, second marriage without getting the consent of first wife, etc, Ms. Pandian said. The year-wise details of pending cases are as follows: 2007 – 350, 2008 – 648 and in 2009 – 1,139.
Some of these were pending in courts and others had gone in for appeal. Ms. Pandian said that when it came to safeguarding dignity and self-respect, women should not remain diffident but assert themselves to claim their societal and constitutional rights. As regards Cuddalore district, the Commission had received 23 petitions - eight through the Social Welfare Department, three through the Revenue Department and 12 through the police. Collector P. Seetharaman and Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis were present.
