Pothole-ridden: The Thiruvahindrapuram road in Cuddalore is in shambles.
CUDDALORE:
The stretch from the Poompuhar showroom junction to the Koothapakkam convent in Cuddalore town is in bad shape. A distance of about two km is full of potholes and trenches.
At certain places, the uneven surface poses difficulty to road-users, particularly cyclists and two-wheeler riders. After the onset of the north-east monsoon, the condition has worsened. A resident of the area, U. Maheswari (29), said that the trenches dug for laying underground drainage was either not properly closed or filled with loose soil. Hence, the surface all along the trenches had ducked where water stagnation had become common.
She also said that students who were cycling their way to schools fall into the trenches, suffering injuries. Even share autorickshaws and autorickshaws that were vying with each other to share their space on the road get struck in the loosened earth. Ms. Maheswari also said that there were occasions when autorickshaws tilted and fell on their sides, injuring the passengers.
Another resident K. Ganesan (32) said that after the digging for the underground drainage had started, the condition of the road had become awful. It happened to be a main thoroughfare to pilgrims, school and college students, shoppers and patients bound for hospitals. However, they would have to travel warily on this stretch, failing which they would face the risk of injuring themselves. The incessant rain had also thrown up a host of problems, because motorists could not see potholes.
Even summer months were no better because when a bus passed through this stretch, it would throw up a cloud of dust, thus affecting two-wheeler riders. The pollution caused by soil dump on the road was also a cause for concern. Mr. Ganesan also said that though the Highways Department officials were making occasional survey of the road, nothing tangible had been done to mitigate the travails of the residents. A police station could also be seen on this road. When contacted, Municipal Chairman T. Thangarasu admitted that the condition of the Thiruvahindrapuram road was nothing to boast of.
The civic body had informed the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board, the executing authority of the underground drainage, to take up with the Highways Department the work to relay the road on a priority basis. The Chairman hoped that the work would be taken up soon after the monsoon.
