Tenders for Neyveli New Thermal Power Project to be invited soon

The performances of Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) for 2010-2011 would have been better had Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) maintained its delivery schedule, said NLC chairman A.R. Ansari on Friday.

Briefing reporters at NLC's annual conference, Mr. Ansari said that they planned to add 1,750 MW since 2009, but BHEL was not able to keep up with delivery schedule due to capacity constraint. NLC Planning and Projects Director, R. Kandasamy told The Hindu that in the next 10 to 15 days' time, they would be floating a tender for 2X500 MW lignite-fired Neyveli New Thermal Power Project in Neyveli town.

The contract would be awarded in the next five to six months and the project commissioned in 48 months. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the implementation on May 18 and a formal order from the Centre was awaited.

Renewable energy

As part of its foray into renewable energy, NLC would set up 10 MW solar projects in Neyveli costing Rs.312.50 crore and 50 MW windmill projects costing Rs.120 crore across the country. The government's approval was awaited for the Rs.10,000 crore coastal coal-based power plant at Sirkazhi. The 2,000 MW plant will use imported coal, he said. According to Mr. Ansari, the lignite-firing of Thermal Power Station-II first unit (250 MW) will be carried out in the next 7 to 10 days. Thereafter, it will take another 10-15 days to synchronise it. It will take two to three months for commissioning of the plant. The second unit will be ready by March 2012.

“The 1,000 MW coal based power project in Tuticorin is expected to be commissioned by 2012-13. With the commissioning of these two projects NLC's power generating capacity will increase to 4,240 MW from 2,740 MW,” he said. To address the evacuation issue, NLC held discussions with Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (TANGEDCO) recently and is willing to invest up to Rs.600 crore in the proposed venture, Mr. Ansari said.
