CUDDALORE:
The inmates of the Cuddalore Central Prison have been shunning food for the past two days, ie., on Sunday and Monday.
It is learnt that as many as 50 inmates developed nausea after a wall lizard was found in the jail food served on Sunday. When three of the inmates, namely Prakash, Bomb Ganesh and Suresh objected to the quality of food, they were allegedly beaten up by the Deputy Jailer and warders.
Voicing a strong protest, the inmates refused to come out of their cells to take food. Meanwhile, another inmate named Mahesh, with a knife in hand, climbed on to a tree on the jail premises on Monday, threatening to commit suicide if the jail authorities did not give assurance to improve the food quality and take action against the warders and the Deputy Jailer. An official team led by Revenue Divisional Officer Murugesan went to the prison to hold talks with the inmates on Monday.
When contacted, Jail Superintendent K.Anandan said that since an official inquiry was going on he could not comment on it.
