Collector P. Seetharaman has put in place an official mechanism to verify and ensure that the pension schemes of the Union and State governments are properly implemented and benefits reached the target groups in time.
Addressing a review meeting of the officials of the Revenue and Postal Departments here, Mr. Seetharaman said both the governments were implementing eight pension schemes for the elderly, differently abled, widows, farm labourers, destitutes and deserted women.
A total of 55,123 people benefited through these schemes as follows:
Cuddalore and Kurinjipadi blocks – 10,091;
Panruti – 9,304;
Chidambaram – 11,715;
Kattumannakoil – 9,873;
Vriddhachalam – 7,510;
and Thittakudi – 5,820.
Mr. Seetharaman said it is the responsibility of tahsildars to ensure that the monetary assistance reaches the beneficiaries by money order before fifth of every month. To verify this, each tashildar should depute 80 persons, at the rate of 10 for each scheme, to the designated places.
Besides this, the District Revenue Officer would select 140 overseers in random to be deputed at the rate of 10 persons for two villages each in all the seven blocks of the district. Whenever the Revenue Divisional Officers and the tahisldars go for inspection, they should make it a point to carry out surprise checks of the beneficiaries. It is mandatory for every tahisldiar to conduct cent per cent audit in every village under his jurisdiction. Mr. Seetharaman said post offices ought to depute 25 field inspectors and 50 overseers every month to carry on the inspection. It was also proposed to introduce a toll free telephone number for the beneficiaries to lodge complaints against lapses, if any, to the Collectorate, he added.
