CUDDALORE:
The construction of concrete houses under the Kalaignar Housing Scheme has gathered momentum in Cuddalore district. Of the 26,119 houses proposed to be built this year, 21 have already been completed and 2,441 are under various stages of construction.
Construction activity is going on at a brisk pace particularly at Thiruvahindrapuram and Otteri areas. One of the beneficiaries, Dhanasekaran, a mason, said that he along with his wife had jointly constructed the dwelling unit. Since no outside labour was involved, they could complete the house within the budget of Rs 75,000. Yet another beneficiary Thangavel at Otteri had availed himself of the benefits of the housing scheme and the total sanitation scheme.
Under the scheme, each unit is to be built on 207 sq.ft of land for which 60 bags of cement, 155 kg of iron rods, 6,500 bricks and 11 units of sand would be required. While the government supplies the necessary cement and iron rods , the beneficiaries have to arrange for other things. District Collector P.Seetharaman said that of the 2,10,750 huts in the district (the second highest in the State next only to Villupuram) 1,26,735 were eligible for the scheme. Those who had their tenements on patta lands, government poromboke, and objectionable or non-objectionable government poromboke were included in the scheme. The administration has trained 113 Self-Help Groups in brick manufacturing to aid the existing 897 units in meeting the demand.
The personnel of the Larsen and Toubro have imparted masonry training to interested youths. The Collector said loans with 35 per cent subsidy would also be arranged for the prospective brick-makers that through the Khadi and Village Board . Another 4,336 houses would be constructed under the Indira Awaz Yojana programme and soon, the landscape of the district would be totally transformed, the Collector added.
