Court directive: Deputy Director (Health) R. Meera sealing an unauthorised chicken centre in Cuddalore on Thursday.
CUDDALORE:
Following a Madras High Court order, an unlicensed chicken centre attached to a private poultry at Koothapakkam near here was sealed on Thursday. Panchayat president Gomathi Srinivasan sealed the centre in the presence of Deputy Director (Health) R. Meera. The centre has been functioning in a residential locality for the past 10 years. Residents had complained that the owner was resorting to indiscriminate disposal of waste originating from the centre. Foul odour and flea menace was causing inconvenience to the residents. Besides causing environmental pollution, the waste also led to increase in stray dog menace.
Several butcher shops had also come up along the road, carrying on trade in an unhygienic condition. Mr. Meera told reporters that officials also seized chicken and appliances from the centre. As the owner had violated provisions of the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act 1939, action was taken in compliance with the court order. She also warned of legal action against unlicensed meat centres in the area.
