NLC sets up first power plant outside Neyveli

CUDDALORE:

For the first time in the annals of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, it has set up a lignite-powered thermal power plant with 250 MW-capacity (125 MW x 2) outside Neyveli at a cost of Rs. 1,626 crore.

A statement released from the NLC said that the unit-I of the plant was inaugurated on Saturday at Barsingsar in Rajasthan by Union Minister of State for Coal Sriprakash Jaiswal in the presence of Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and NLC Chairman-cum-Managing Director A.R. Ansari. The statement said that while the unit-I was dedicated to the nation, synchronisation of the unit-II was done on the occasion.

Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the lignite mine in September 2008 and the synchronisation of the unit-I was done on October 27, 2009. On completion of the project, about 2,190 million units of power would be generated a year and supplied to Rajasthan. The salient feature of the plant was installation of the eco-friendly ‘circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) boilers' that would cut the emission level of sulphur dioxide. The NLC had also planted one lakh saplings on the project site to improve greenery and spent Rs 5.5 crore on construction of new roads in the area, the statement added.
