“Krishtionary” is a new word coined by the Krishnasamy Memorial Matriculation Higher Secondary School for an exhibition dedicated to English language.
Starting from the common usage of idioms and phrases, the expo gradually progresses into unravelling the intricacies and nuances of the English language in its varied dimensions. It has displayed a wide range of homonyms, similar sounding words with different meanings. Organisers have collected the words to prove that English is best understood in contextual manner. Vocabulary is as important as pronunciation, and, grammar is another vital aspect to master the language. How English is a vibrant and evolving language has been amply proved by culling out the words that have originated from other languages.
List of phobias
The section devoted to science and technology has showcased the development in space science and communication technology. It has made out an exhaustive list of phobias that mankind is prone to, and, a cursory glance will reveal that none will be exempt from it. The event also traces the history of newspapers and showcases a wide range of English magazines to give an inkling to the global reach of English which has made its learning inevitable.
The Spell Bee contest is another event that tested English knowledge base of students. Deputy Superintendent of Police S.S. Mageswaran, in his address, said that the exhibits, enriched and endowed with knowledge, ought to be studied leisurely and not in a hurried fashion. He called upon the students to concentrate on extra curricular activities, besides studies, and join National Cadet Corp or National Social Service to do service to the nation.
He recalled that a student of the school who found currency notes wrapped in a newspaper lying unclaimed on the road promptly handed it over to the police, who later traced the owner, a differently abled person.
Indicator
It was an indicator of the character he imbibed from the school, Mr. Mageswaran said. School president K .Rajendran said that the school was preparing students not only for examinations but also inculcating in them good habits and moral values so as to equip them to become good citizens and make a mark in their chosen fields. A. Selavarj Gnanaguru, Principal of Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, explained the power of words, while Sujatha Srinivasan, Member of the Juvenile Justice Board, complemented the school management for kindling the intellectual quest of students. Principal R. Natarajan and vice-principal Chandrika Balasubramanian participated.
