Pressing rights: Members of Tamil Nadu Government Employees' Association observing a fast in front of the Cuddalore Collectrate on Thursday.
CUDDALORE:
Members of the Tamil Nadu Government Employees' Association observed a fast in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday, urging the government to give up the outsourcing process. It also opposed the re-induction of retired employees on a contract basis and appointing people on a consolidated pay.
The association noted that the large number of vacancies existing in government departments ought to be filled either through employment offices or Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission examinations. The government had abandoned the practice of having consultations with representatives of the government employees and teachers' associations before implementing the Pay Commission's recommendations, the members said. It was eight years since such a healthy approach was jettisoned, they added. Anomalies in the pay scale for technical hands continued in the seventh pay revision too and these ought to be removed through consultation with the respective section of employees.
The association urged the government to declare municipal employees and temple staff serving under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department as government employees and accordingly disburse salary through the treasury. Health insurance The association also wanted the government to take over the health insurance scheme for the employees from the Star Health and Allied Insurance Company or entrust it to a public sector undertaking. It opined that since the conduct rules were so designed “to stifle the democratic actions of the employees,” they should be scrapped and the right to strike given legal sanction.
