Over 400 arrested for staging protest, released at Chidambaram

CUDDALORE: 

             Defying police orders, activists of the Untouchability Eradication Front on Wednesday made an attempt to enter the Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram to demolish a wall that “stands testimony to the prevalence of the worst form of discrimination in a holy place.”

      However, police stalled their attempt, resulting in a tussle. When a section of activists tried to break through the police cordon, they were stopped. Block traffic Later, the front members squatted on the road blocking traffic for about half an hour in protest against police action. The police took 475 protestors, including 57 women, into preventive custody. All of them were released in the evening. Those who courted arrest included Perambur MLA S.K. Mahendran, State committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) S. Dhanasekaran, party district secretary T. Arumugham, State president of the All India Kisan Sabha K. Balakrishnan, State organiser of the Front S. Durariraj, Ambedkar Indhiya Kudiyarasu Katchi's A.T. Srirangan Prakash and Human Rights Party's L.R.Viswanathan. Earlier, the Front took out a procession from the B.R.Ambedkar statue on North Street to the south entrance.
