CUDDALORE:

The Centre is about to set up 55 radars across the country for weather observation and forecast. Two out of them will come up in Chennai and Ramanathapuram, and, one in Karaikkal, according to S.R. Ramanan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

He was speaking at a function got up at Alathur in Mangalore block, about 80 km from here, to inaugurate an ‘C' on Saturday. Mr. Ramanan said that more number of radars would enable accurate prediction of monsoon and weather conditions. He said that Tamil Nadu was likely to get above average rainfall from the north-east monsoon that was about to set in before October 10. Last year, Tamil Nadu received a 25 per cent deficit rainfall.

Collector P. Seetharaman said that weather forecast played a vital role in giving essential inputs to fishermen and farmers. He underscored the point that trees were of utmost importance in inducing precipitation of rain. Hence, he had launched a district-wide drive to plant one lakh saplings within a fortnight.
