Enumeration of huts in 13 blocks of Cuddalore district will begin on March 29 to identify beneficiaries for the Kalaignar Housing Scheme.
A total number of 27 teams would carry out the exercise, according to Collector P. Seetharaman. In a statement here, he said that it had been proposed to convert all huts into concrete buildings in the next six years under the scheme. Cuddalore district had the highest number of huts in the State, next to Villupuram. 1.95 lakh huts in Cuddalore district As per the 2001 statistics, there were 681 villages with a total of 1.95 lakh huts in Cuddalore district. Of them, 270 villages had 200 huts each, 334 villages had more than 200 huts each, 73 villages had 500 huts each, and, four villages had 1,000 huts each. Mr. Seetharaman noted that the Village Administrative Officers, ‘Makkal Nala Paniyalargal,' panchayat clerks, Block Development Officers, tahsildars and Sub-Collectors would be involved in preparing the list of beneficiaries.
