Cadres of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, led by P.H. Pandian, former Assembly Speaker, staged a demonstration in front of the Panruti bus stand, alleging inaction on the part of the civic body in providing basic amenities.
Mr. Pandian said that the agitation was held on the direction of the party general secretary, Jayalalithaa, because Panruti town was reeling under drinking water scarcity and facing health hazards owing to sewage overflow. Though an underground drainage project was proposed in 2006, it was yet to materialise. Had the Wallajah canal project been implemented, drinking water problem could have been tackled. It was owing to the inefficiency of the civic body that the residents were put to hardship, Mr. Pandian said. However, in a statement released here, municipal chairman Pachaiyappan denied the allegations. He said that in the past three years, basic amenities had been improved in the town utilising funds provided under various heads, including the MLA and MP Local Area Development funds. Two big overhead tanks and six normal size overhead tanks had been constructed for streamlining water supply in the town. Twenty deep borewells had also been sunk at various places, he said.
