Guest lecturers of Periyar Government Arts College here observed a fast on the campus on Tuesday.
Cuddalore chapter president of the Guest Lecturers' Association, P. Natesan, said that they were serving in the same capacity for the past six years. They were getting only a consolidated pay of Rs. 6,000 a month. From January 2010, they were not given any pay. Mr. Natesan said the Madras High Court had stated that the guest lecture concept should be dispensed with and only lecturers on a regular basis should be appointed. But, the services of the guest lecturers were not yet regularised. Rather, in the past three years, the Teachers' Recruitment Board had appointed 2,600 lectures to various government colleges. They were mostly drawn from private colleges whereas the guest lecturers already serving in the government colleges were ignored. At least 1,500 guest lecturers were thrown out of job so far. It was the plea of the Association that whenever vacancies in regular jobs arise, guest lecturers should be absorbed and their services regularised.
