CUDDALORE:

The police today unravelled a murder plot and arrested four persons who had hatched a conspiracy to kill a rival gang leader. A country-made revolver, four crude bombs and three sharp-edged weapons were seized from them, Ashwin Kotnis, Superintendent of Police said.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Kotnis said that two rival groups, one led by Vellai Guna and another by Senthil, were operating from Puducherry. They used to cross over to Tamil Nadu to commit crimes. The SP said that Vellai Guna was about to attend a trial in the Cuddalore court on Tuesday. Members of the rival gang were doing the rounds for the past three to four days in Cuddalore and Puducherry to track him. The special police team was closely monitoring their movements. On Sunday, the police spotted three of them speeding past the Reddichavadi police station in a motorcycle.

The police intercepted them and found the weapons and crude bombs in their possession. During investigation they confessed that they planned to murder Vellai Guna while he was going to the court. Thus, Mr Kotnis said, a probable murder attempt was averted by the timely intervention of the police. The police arrested V. Vasu alias Palaniraja (32) of Puducherry, G. Devaraj (24) of Kancheepuram, S. Dhamu alias Damodaran (24) of Thiruvannamali and M. Vijayakumar (22) of Kalpakkam. All the arrested had booked for offences such as murder and robbery committed on various occasions.
