“Varsities should make students employable”

Annamalai University Vice-Chancellor M.Ramanathan addressing a training programme at Chidambaram on Monday.

CUDDALORE:

The universities should not remain complacent with teaching and awarding degrees. They should also teach soft skills to the students to make them employable, said M.Ramanathan, Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University.

He was delivering the inaugural address at the “Teacher training programme in accounting and auditing for vocational teachers of southern region” jointly organised by the Department of Commerce, Annamalai University, and the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), Bhopal, on the university premises at Chidamabram on Monday.

Dr. Ramanathan said that in the case of medical courses it was not a problem because the curriculum was framed to combine education with hands-on experience that equipped the candidates either to take up jobs or to start private practice. The engineering and agricultural graduates too, to a certain extent, got exposure to job markets on the strength of their professional skills; whereas, the students of arts and science subjects were left to fend for themselves because they could not boast of having the required skills.

Dr Ramanathan said that in this context the Annamalai University was doing well by teaching the students vocational skills and also conducting training programmes for teachers to handle the vocational subjects in an efficient manner. The university in collaboration with a private bank was also giving vocational training to the students for which he applauded the Department of Commerce. He further observed that the arts and science students, however, had a wider choice as they could land up in jobs in banks or schools or private concerns firms.
R.Chandramohan, programme director and Head, Department of Commerce, R.Muthuraj, programme coordinator, NCERT, and D.Selvaraju, Dean, Faculty of Arts, and H.Sankar, Professor in Commerce, spoke.
