Awareness rally marks Consumer Day in Cuddalore


A World Consumer Day awareness rally being flagged off by district consumer court judge P. Ganesan at Cuddalore on Monday. 
 
CUDDALORE: 

          District Consumer Court Judge P.Ganesan flagged off an awareness rally to mark World Consumer Day celebrations here on Monday.

          A large number of school students and consumer activists participated in the rally organised under the aegis of the Consumer Federation of Tamil Nadu. A group of activists would visit various places in the district such as Panruti, Vriddhachalam and Chidambaram to spread the message that all those who buy goods and services would be considered as consumers and therefore, they could assert their rights and seek compensation for any deficiencies as provided under the Consumer Protection Act 1986. The government organisations, cooperative societies and private trade were bound by the Act. If any trader or dealer was selling substandard, defective or prohibitive goods and adopting unfair trade practices he would be liable for action.

               The consumer forums would also impress upon the people the need to get receipts or bills for every purchase, and also the guarantee/warranty cards. The deficiency in services or goods could be compensated through the consumer courts by simply making over the petitions in a plain paper. For losses up to Rs 20 lakh the District Consumer Court could be approached, for losses above Rs 20 lakh and up to Rs 1 crore the State Consumer Court could be moved and for losses above Rs 1 crore the National Consumer Court could be moved. As per the Rights to Information Act 2005 consumers could seek details related to the activity of the government so as to ensure transparency and strengthen democracy and obtain social justice.
