CUDDALORE:
Social activists belonging to various fora staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Chief Educational Officer here on Monday protesting collection of excess fee in private and government-aided schools in the district.
Those who assembled at the CEO's office, under the banner of the Federation of All Public Welfare Organisations, also sent a representation to School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu urging him to strictly implement the recommendations of Justice Govindarajan Committee on school tuition fee structure.
It noted that the private and government-aided schools were collecting tuition fees and other miscellaneous fees over and above the level fixed by the committee. Moreover, to gloss over the fact those schools abdicated their responsibility of issuing receipts for the payments. It also pointed out that the teachers in the private and government-aided schools were demanding additional payment for handling the evening classes which obviously was passed on to the students, thereby making it impossible for the wards of the economically weaker sections to attend the special classes.
Therefore, the federation called for stringent action against those schools that were extracting more than the permitted fees. The federation alleged that the functioning of the Parent-Teachers' Association was neither visible nor transparent. The Federation called upon the authorities to restructure the PTAs in such a way that only the students studying in the same school and their parents were elected as members. Those who participated included federation organiser M.Nizamudeen, joint organiser V.Kumar, district secretary of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi Thirumaran and others.
