CUDDALORE:
State secretary of the Communist Party of India D. Pandian on Wednesday flagged off a ‘temple entry' rally, organised under the aegis of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, at Chidambaram.
Mr. Pandian said that the south entrance of the Nataraja temple, through which Nandanar gained entry, remained closed for several years. The State government had not taken any measure to rectify this even after taking over the temple. Mr. Pandian pointed out that the government's announcement that caste would not be a bar in becoming archakas remained on paper. He called upon the government to make it a reality.
After he left, CPI activists, including Reddiyarpalayam constituency (Puducherry) MLA Viswanathan and Thiruthuraipoondi MLA Ulaganathan, took out a procession through the West Street and South Street. The police blocked their way at the bus stop on the South Street and took 1,144 activists, including 135 women, into custody. There was heavy police presence at all the entry points to the temple. Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis was camping in the temple town. In the evening all those arrested were released.
