Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam releasing water from the Keelanai on Wednesday.

CUDDALORE:

Water was released from the Keelanai on Wednesday for irrigating tail-end areas of the Delta region.

Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam, who opened the dam shutters, said the water release would benefit over 1.25 lakh acres in Cuddalore and Nagapattinam districts. Depending upon the requirements of farmers, the quantum of release would be suitably adjusted in course of time. He called upon farmers to judiciously use the water.

Mr. Panneerselvam said that the government had sanctioned Rs.108 crore for strengthening the left bank of the Coleroon. The government was always taking pro-active measures to fulfil the requirements of people. District Collector P. Seetharaman, D. Ravikumar, MLA, and officials accompanied the Minister. Vice-president of the Cauvery Delta Farmers' Welfare Association K.V. Kannan has stated that the discharge of 4,000 cusecs from the Mettur dam was inadequate even to raise paddy seedlings. He urged the Chief Minister to step up the quantum of release from the Stanley reservoir to 10,000 cusecs.
