Stress on need for women study centres

CUDDALORE:

Women Study Centre should be formed in educational institutions to focus on issues concerning women and how to tackle them, said Nirmala Jeyaraj, former Principal of the Lady Doak College, Madurai.

She was addressing the 100th International Women's Day celebrations organised by the Theivanai Ammal College for Women here on Friday. Ms. Jeyaraj said such a centre should also call for a change in the societal attitude towards women. The United Nations had acknowledged the fact that social progress can be achieved only with the participation and equality of women, she said. Principal Kasturibai Dhanasekaran said that the women students in the region were facing many problems that hindered their pursuit of higher studies.

They want to discontinue education for reasons such as marriage, child birth, transfer of family members and fear of eve-teasing. College Secretary Senthil Kumar said that the college had a tie up with the Lingnan University, Hong Kong, and soon the student-faculty exchange would take place. An interactive session with students, parents and teachers, and panel discussions on women's issues followed. An exhibition of the handicrafts and paintings of the students were showcased.
