Slum Clearance Board Houses Inaugurated

CUDDALORE: 

         Minister for Slum Clearance Board and Accommodation Control Suba.Thangavelan inaugurated 168 houses built at a cost of Rs. 6.25 crore by his department for the people living in vulnerable coastal areas at Parangipettai near here on Wednesday.

            Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam, Collector P. Seetharaman and District Revenue Officer S. Natarajan participated in the function organised. Mr. Thangavelan said that each of these houses was built on 325 sq.ft. at a cost of Rs. 3.71 lakh. Under the Rajiv Gandhi Rehabilitation Pacakage II, vulnerable coastal areas (prone to natural disasters such as cyclone and tsunami) had been identified in eight districts. Those residing in tenements put up within 200 metres of the coastline were eligible to get the houses.

            Mr. Thangavelan said that he had received a proposal from Mr. Seetharaman for the construction of 1,583 houses in the vulnerable areas, estimated to cost Rs. 58.73 crore. So far, land had been acquired for the construction of 1,017 houses and of which 367 had been completed. Construction works were under way in coastal areas such as Sellankuppam, Lanjadi, Singarathoppu, Sonankuppam, Suthukulam, Panankattu Colony, Killai and Mudasal Odai. Responding to the plea for more houses, Mr. Thangavelan said that those who were not covered under the scheme could seek shelters under various other projects such as the Kalaignar Housing Scheme and the District Rural Development Agency schemes.
Mr. Panneerselvam disbursed a financial assistance of Rs. 3.8 lakh to the Muslim Women Welfare Association. He said that under various welfare schemes launched by the State government, each family benefited to the extent of Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 75,000. Under the maternity assistance scheme, a total amount of Rs. 1,000 crore was so far disbursed to 20 lakh pregnant women. As many as 1.46 crore identity cards had been given under the Kalaignar Health Scheme which enabled beneficiaries to get treatment in hundreds of designated hospitals.
