Mangled:Vehicles involved in a multiple collision at Chinnakanganankuppam, near Cuddalore on Tuesday.

In a multiple collision that occurred on Tuesday at Chinnakanganankuppam, located on the Cuddalore—Puducherry highway near here, four persons got killed and eight others were seriously injured.
A cement laden multiple-axle truck, a lorry, a share-auto and a motorcycle, besides two pedestrians, were involved in the accident. The truck proceeding from Cuddalore to Puducherry had a head-on collision with the lorry coming from the opposite direction. The impact was such that the front portions of both the vehicles were heavily damaged, with their axles broken. The overturned vehicles lied about 100 metres apart and the share-auto was found smashed behind the lorry. The motorcycle too was thrown on the road side. As the accident had occurred in a split second there was no eye-witness account.
Of the victims only two were identified as P. Pavithra (eight-year-old and a Class III student) and Arumugham (42), a farm hand. The bodies were taken to the Cuddalore headquarters government hospital for post-mortem. The injured, including a doctor serving in a Primary Health Centre, have been referred to Chennai government hospital. It was presumed that the truck might have lost control and crashed against the oncoming lorry and the share-auto and the motorcycles trailing behind the lorry. Another version had it that after the axle got broken the driver of the truck might have lost control resulting in the accident. Parasuraman (48), father of Pavithra, was in a dazed condition. He lost his elder daughter Pavithra in the mishap while his younger daughter P. Bharati (five-year-old studying Class I) sustained head injury.
When asked he said that the accident occurred soon after his daughters had returned from school. While he was standing with his daughters on the roadside he heard a loud thud after which he saw Pavithra lying dead in a pool of blood. He could not exactly recall how it occurred. A large number of local people and passersby gathered there to help out the injured. The traffic on the highway was affected for over an hour.
