SBI contributes Rs. 50,000 to special school at Manjakuppam

          Suresh Johnson, Assistant General Manager of State Bank of India, Puducherry regional office, handed over a cheque for Rs. 50,000 to the Dhaya special school (for mentally challenged children) on the occasion of the Bank Day celebrations held in the Manjakuppam branch here on Thursday.

         Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Johnson said that it was apt to extend the financial support to the special school, run by dedicated personalities, for buying furniture at this juncture. He said the special children were really special in the sense that they were endowed with skills in music and arts. He said that besides rendering financial services to the satisfaction of the customers, the SBI was also spending substantial amount for the cause of the community. For the bank, more than the physical properties, customers were the valuable assets.

          With 17,000 branches spread across the nation, the bank had computerised its operations at a cost of Rs. 1,000 crore. In appreciation of its services, the Bankers' Magazine had adjudged the SBI as the Best Bank in the world for two years in a row, that is, in 2008 and 2009. Senior Branch Manager K. Govindarajan said that under the Girl Child Adoption Programme, the Manjakuppam branch was extending monetary support at the rate of Rs. 5,000 each to four students namely Gitanjali, Divyadarshini, Dakshyayini and Soundarya of the Old Town area.

            Under the programme, the bank was identifying the girl students from the economically weaker sections to support their education up to the college level. The branch was also extending financial assistance for social, educational and communal causes. It had contributed a sum of Rs. 3 lakh towards community services, including Rs. 10,000 to the blind school for the purchase of Braille books, Rs. 20,000 to the HelpAge India and so on. Mr. Govindarajan said that the staff would work extra hours to compensate for the time taken for the function.
