Jewellery marts do brisk business

CUDDALORE:

Jewellery marts here did brisk business on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya on Sunday.

According to a jewellery shop owner, the bullish trend in the bullion market had not dampened buyers' spirit, thanks to the marriage season. However, post offices and nationalised banks that were also marketing gold coins of higher purity than those sold in the open market, remained closed on Sunday. Meanwhile, consumer activists launched a campaign to create awareness of gold purchase. Members of the Consumer Confederation of India and the Consumer Federation Tamil Nadu distributed handbills to passers-by on Lawrence Road insisting that buyers get proper receipts for every purchase. The receipts alone would help them in case of dispute over quality and also fetch revenue to the exchequer, according to M. Nizamudeen, executive general secretary of the federation. Consumers should also check for Bureau of Indian Standards marking for ensuring the quality of jewellery.

In case of complaints regarding hallmark jewellery, the consumers could contact

The Deputy Director of BIS,
CIT Campus, IV Cross Road,
Chennai-600013,
Ph: 044-22541442.

For any misleading advertisements regarding jewellery, they could contact

The Advertising Standards Council of India,
205, Bombay Market,
Post Box No.7939,
Tardeo Road,
Mumbai-400 034.
