Local body blamed for subway project delay

CUDDALORE:

The Joint Action Council of Welfare Organisations of Cuddalore has blamed the municipality for the delay in commencing the work on the subway at Lawrence Road level crossing here.

In a recent meeting held under the aegis of the Consumer Federation of Tamil Nadu, the JAC adopted a resolution urging the civic body to immediately obtain the Council's approval for the construction of the subway and a service road. Coordinator of the JAC M. Nizamudeen said that the Southern Railway had approved the blueprint for the project and the State government expressed its readiness to allot funds. However, the municipality “was sitting on the proposal” even after Collector P. Seetharaman had requested it to pass a resolution, clearing the project without delay.

Mr. Nizamudeen alleged that the municipality had delayed the project by proposing to the Collector to convene a meeting of leaders of all political parties and representatives of welfare organisations to discuss the issue. He said that if the municipality did not act immediately, the welfare organisations would stage a demonstration. Representation District Chairman of Lions Clubs International K. Thirumalai, in a representation to the Divisional Railway Manager, Southern Railway, said that as per the latest schedule, the railway crossing would have to be closed 20 times a day, each closure extending to 10 minutes. This meant that vehicular movement would be disrupted on this section for over three hours a day.

As the railway track is running across the heart of the town, which has temples and commercial established on the one side of the track and the Collectorate and educational institutions and hospitals on the other, the closure of gates for a long duration would cause great inconvenience to the people. Mr. Thirumalai urged the Southern Railway to expedite the work on the proposed subway. He also wanted the Southern Railway to extend the Tambaram-Villupuram passenger train service to the Cuddalore Port junction, and, the Tirunelveli-Mayiladuthurai passenger train service to Villupuram.
