Computer training for coastal residents

CUDDALORE:

The M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation at Chidambaram has been imparting computer training to coastal residents through its Village Knowledge Centres.

The objective of the programme is to help the people stay abreast of technological development, according to R. Elangovan, Project Officer of the Foundation. He told The Hindu that the Foundation had set up Village Knowledge Centres in coastal areas such as Nochikadu, Manikollai, Samiyarpettai, Parangipettai, Muzhukkuthurai, Mudasal Odai and M.G.R.Nagar.

Courses

The courses being taught at these centres were formed in association with Intel and Microsoft. In every batch, 15 to 20 candidates were being trained for a period of six months and on successful completion of the course, they were given certificates, which would help them in pursuing higher education. These centres were also imparting need-based training to fishermen. For instance, they had realised the importance of Global Positioning System (GPS) and the centre helped them in acquiring knowledge on this subject. At a function held at the Chidambaram office recently to distribute certificates, Mr. Elangovan highlighted the benefits of raising trees. According to a research conducted by the Calcutta University, a 50-year-old tree would be worth Rs. 15.70 lakh rupees in terms of oxygen production, serving as shelter and food supplier to animals and birds, cleansing the air of carbondioxide, production of organic manure with fallen leaves and as rain-inducting agent.

President-elect of the Rotary Club of Chidambaram S. Senthilkumar called upon students to utilise the Village Knowledge Centres. If the students worked hard, they could make the dream of former President A.P.J.Abdul Kalam - to turn India into super power by 2020 - a reality.

One lakh saplings

Mr .Senthilkumar said the service organisation had decided to plant one lakh saplings during this year and appealed to the social activists to get free saplings being distributed by the Club. Former president of the Rotary Club C.T. Ramasamy urged the students to imbibe ideals and set goals in their life.
