Rush at employment office

CUDDALORE:

Thousands of students who successfully completed Plus-Two examinations are flocking the employment office here every day for enrollment. The rush is expected to continue through June and July.

The enrollment session begins at 8 a.m. goes beyond the closing time, till the last candidate is cleared, according to G. Kannan, District Employment Officer. He told The Hindu that awareness of the need to register was growing every year. Two reasons could be attributed to the trend - the Union government organisations insist on registration numbers given by the employment office; and the State government's financial assistance to candidates who remain unemployed for five years. Mr. Kannan said that as many as 2,636 candidates, a majority of them girls, turned up for registration on Thursday. On Friday, the total was 2,000. To avoid overcrowding, registration was being done in three more centres - Government Girls' Higher Secondary School at Chidambaram, Government boys' HSS at Vriddhachalam and NLC Boys' HSS at Neyveli.

A database on the candidates was created and each one was given a registration number. The unemployment dole happened to be a major attraction to the candidates as the government provided for disbursement of aid as follows: for SSLC candidates – Rs. 450, Plus-Two – Rs 600, undergraduates – Rs. 900 on a quarterly basis. The process was further streamlined this year in the case of SSLC students. In other words, the schools concerned ought to send details of the candidates to the employment office through the respective Chief Educational Officers. The employment office, in turn, would create a database and allot registration numbers and send the registration cards through the “responsible persons” appointed by the schools.
