CUDDALORE:
Collector P. Seetharaman gave away a sum of Rs. 6.34 lakh as compensation towards crop losses suffered by farmers at a grievance day meeting held here on Friday.
He said that the standing samba crop of 324 farmers was damaged in rain in 2009, for which they were now compensated through the crop insurance scheme. Mr. Seetharaman directed the officials of the Agricultural Engineering Department to make available adequate number of weed removing devices to the farmers who had adopted the System of Rice Intensification. He said that encroachments on the Kumalangulam would soon be removed and feeder channels renovated. Shutters would be fitted at the Kunamangalam tank and encroachments in the area removed.
A proposal had been sent to the government to put up cement blocks to prevent incursion of saline water into the Khansahib Canal at North Chavadi in Chidambaram block.
Mr. Seetharaman said that to remove the shortcomings in the functioning of the Perur Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society, the Joint Registrar had been asked to conduct a review with the special officer concerned.
