50 differently abled selected at recruitment drive

CUDDALORE: 

            Over 50 differently abled persons were selected in a special recruitment drive conducted by the district administration and an Avinashi-based garment company here on Saturday, according to P. Seetharaman, Collector.

        After inaugurating the “job mela” on the Collectorate complex here, Mr. Seetharaman said more than 400 differently abled persons from various parts of the district participated in the event. The eligible candidates would soon get the job orders from Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam.

         They would be employed in S.E.M. Garments, Avinashi. Women would get a monthly salary of Rs. 3,250 and men, Rs. 4,500. The candidates would be provided free accommodation and a monthly deduction of Rs. 600 for women and Rs. 800 for men would be made for food expenses. Depending upon their aptitude and ability, they would also get increments. The Collector also released a handbook listing out the schemes launched by the State government for the differently abled.

            As for as Cuddalore district was concerned, a total assistance of Rs. 209.29 crore was given away to differently abled persons during 2009-2010, he said.

Separate department

            The Collector further said that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had taken special interest in improving the quality of life of the differently abled and he had set up a separate department for achieving the objective. These measures had provided much needed rehabilitation avenues to the differently abled. The Collector noted that national identity cards were issued to 29,215 differently abled persons in the district. On the weekly grievance day sessions held on Mondays, special attention was being paid to differently abled persons. A separate pathway with a ramp had been set up for their convenience at the venue and their petitions were disposed of within a week.

           During the last financial year (2009-10), appliances worth over Rs. 12 lakh and financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 1.75 crore were given away to them through the Differently-Abled Persons' Welfare Department. Under the ‘Vazhnthu Kattuvom Thittam,' Rs 1.86 crore was disbursed as personal economic assistance to 1,960 people. In the past four months, no official functions were conducted without handing over aid to differently abled persons, the Collector said.

            Those who participated on the occasion included Welfare Officer Srinivasan, garment company manager Yogamurthy and Public Relations Officer P. Muthiah.
