Narikoravas seek basic amenities

CUDDALORE:

The Narikoravas on Monday made representations to District Collector P. Seetharam seeking basic amenities in their colony at Thirumanikuzhi near here.

According to Anjalai (47), a spokesperson for the nomads, there are about 30 families, with over 100 members, living in the area. The dwelling units were built for them by a non-governmental organisation when the permanent houses for the tsunami-affected people were constructed. She further said that the colony lacked electricity connections and water supply. The groundwater available there was muddy and full of iron content. The consumption of such water over a period of time would certainly cause health hazards. She noted that the entire colony was covered with bushy areas that were infested with poisonous snakes. There were many occasions on which children suffered snake bites. Therefore, the Narikoravas also requested the Collector to clean up the area to make their life safe.
