Protest:Representatives of social welfare organisations who besieged the Highways Department on Beach Road in Cuddalore were arrested on Monday.

CUDDALORE:

The police arrested members of the Federation of All Social Welfare Organisations, led by its coordinator M.Nizamudeen, who besieged the office of the Divisional Engineer of Highways located on the Beach Road here on Monday.

They stated that the Tamil Nadu government had already sanctioned a sum of Rs 7.6 crore for the construction of a subway at the Lawrence Road level-crossing in the heart of the town. But there was unusual delay on the part of the Highways Department and the Railways in calling for tender for the works. Considering the urgency of taking up the project many agitations were held to draw the attention of the authorities but the latter seemed to be taking their own time.

Even the formation of a coordination committee by Collector P. Seetharaman and passing of a resolution in the Cuddalore Municipality for the subway construction did not stir the authorities concerned to act in right earnest, he added. All of those arrested were released in the evening.
