CB-CID probe sought into man's death

CUDDALORE:

Rights activists have called for a CB-CID probe into the death of K.Ravi (38), belonging to Korava community.

In a joint statement issued here, they said that Ravi was picked up from his houses at Thandavankuppam in Vriddhachalam block in the early hours on August 16 by a team of plainclothes policemen “without giving any reason.” The activist also alleged that on August 17, another team of police personnel obtained signature from Ravi's wife, Kasthuri (30), under duress, and asked her to come to Cuddalore to get the body of Ravi on August 18.

On August 19, she went to Chennai to consult the Tamil Nadu Kuravar Pazhangudi Makkal Sangam for taking legal action. Ravi's body was handed over to Kasthuri on August 20 after post-mortem at the Cuddalore Government Hospital. The activists said that police registered a case on August 18 stating that policemen were chasing Ravi who was found moving about in a suspicious manner in a cashew grove at Sathipattu. He tripped over a stone, fell down and died.

The activists alleged that it was an attempt by the Naduveerapattu police to cover up the death of Ravi in police custody, and hence, called for a CB-CID probe. They also demanded action against the police officers involved in the episode, Rs. 10 lakh compensation and a government job to Ms. Kasthuri, and, the release of eight persons who were witness to the police torture on Ravi.
