Well-equipped: Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis handing over whistles to local youths who intend to join police personnel during night patrolling, in Cuddalore on Tuesday.
CUDDALORE:
Following a series of burglaries reported from various places in Cuddalore district in the past one week, Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis has initiated multi-pronged measures such as intensifying night patrolling, setting up new check-posts and forming “Mohalla Committees” to prevent crimes.
Mr. Kotnis told The Hindu that the personnel on night beats were provided arms and wireless sets and also given “fire power” to retaliate in case they encounter any gang wielding deadly weapons. A series of thefts took place within a week in commercial establishments at Periapattu and B.Mutlur and two house-break incidents reported in Cuddalore on successive days.
Mr. Kotnis said that six highway patrol parties would cover the NH-45A from Reddichavadi to Vallampadugai, covering Cuddalore, Pudhuchathiram, Bhuvanagiri and Chidambaram; SH-9 from Cuddalore to Veeraperumanallur covering Nellikuppam and Panrutti; SH -68 from Cuddalore to Natham covering Thirupadiripuliyur, Palur, Panruti and Pudupettai; NH-45C from Kandarakottai to Vanamadevi covering Pudupettai, Panruti, Kadampuliyur, Vadalur and Sethiathope; SH-69 from Vriddhachalam to Mangalampettai covering Poovanur, Vijayamanaaram and Periyavadavadi; and, NH-45 from Koothakudi railway gate to Tholudur bridge covering Vepur, Avatti and Ramanatham.
Mr. Kotnis said that police personnel would perform better with support of citizens. Hence, he directed the police stations to encourage people to form “Mohalla Committees” in the areas falling under their jurisdiction.
The committee members would maintain vigil and inform the police about movement of strangers or provide information about crimes. The “Mohalla Committees” would function in addition to the “Friends of Police” set-up so as to create more number of vigilant citizens and ensure uninterrupted communication between people and security personnel. Starting from Tuesday, armed police personnel would do night rounds in Cuddalore and Panruti blocks on four two-wheelers and two four-wheelers in lanes and by-lanes. Mr. Kotnis also distributed handbills to people and whistles to 20 youth, who wanted to assist the police in crime prevention.
