CUDDALORE:
Orathur panchayat in the Keerapalayam block near here has bagged the Uthamar Gandhi Award for 2008-2009. In a statement released here, Collector P. Seetharaman said that the award included a certificate, a shield and a special financial allocation of Rs. 5 lakh. The panchayat president would get a certificate and a medal. The award instituted by the State government in 2006-07 was being given away annually to local bodies in appreciation of the initiatives taken in providing basic amenities and augmenting revenue.
