Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam inaugurated a “valaikappu” function at Kurinjipadi near here in which as many as 575 expectant mothers participated.
The Minister said that financial assistance of Rs. 6,000 given to pregnant women over a period of six months under the Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Assistance Scheme was unique. So far, a total of 20,11,511 pregnant women in the State benefited under the scheme to the extent of Rs. 1,000 crore. It reduced maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate. Mr. Panneerselvam complimented the officials for successfully implementing the scheme. He said that to render efficient healthcare services, vacancies in government hospitals were being filled. These included appointment of 6,498 doctors, 11,941 nurses, 1,282 Village Health Nurses and 30,218 workers. Ever since its introduction, the “108” ambulance services had helped 1,10,480 deliveries.
The Minister pointed out that in healthcare delivery, Cuddalore occupied the ninth place in the State and called upon the medical fraternity to strive to take the district to number one position. Doctors from PHCs should render services in the hospitals from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, and if they failed to do so action would be taken against them. Mr. Panneerselvam noted that under the Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme, a total of 83,993 people underwent surgery at a total cost of Rs. 238 crore. The Minister observed that the Theerthagiri and Kundiamallur Primary Health Centres in the Kurinjipadi block had been elevated and new PHCs opened at Thiruchopuram and Thondamanallur. Mr. Panneerselvam disbursed financial aid of Rs. 400 each to 51 differently abled persons and gave away pattas to 31 residents of Agaram. They gave the petition directly when the Minister visited the village recently.
