CUDDALORE:
The Education Department along with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has embarked upon a “Green Cover Project” to promote tree planning in schools to combat global warming.
The schools are given financial aid for procuring saplings, tree guards, etc. Inaugurating the project at Thiruvahindrapuram Government School near here on Tuesday, Collector P. Seetharaman said that the State government made budgetary allocation for the pilot project. It had released Rs. 95,000 through the TNPCB to extend an assistance of Rs. 9,500 each to 10 schools to raise at least 100 trees at each school. Originally, it was planned to implement the project only in four schools in the revenue district. Later, it was decided to cover 10 schools - five each in Cuddalore and Vriddhachalam educational districts.
Rain-deficit district
Mr. Seetharaman said that owing to global warming, rainfall had become erratic, thereby posing an imminent threat of water shortage. As Cuddalore had become a rain-deficit district, groundwater level had depleted. The situation forced the district administration to spend crores of rupees on installing hand pumps and tapping water sources by sinking deep borewells. Mr. Seetharaman said that creating green cover would induce rainfall and improve the situation. Arrangements had been made to raise saplings through the Forest Department for public distribution, he added.
Role of NGO
Mr. Seetharaman stressed on the role of non-governmental organisations in expanding green cover. He also administered oath to students on protecting planet earth for the posterity. The oath, prepared by the Education Department and the TNPCB, focused on the need for keeping the environment clean, setting up parks, keeping drainage uncluttered, adhering to pollution control norms by industries, proper maintenance of automobiles, judicial use of petroleum products and electric appliances.
