Silver Beach Losing Its Sheen

Unseemly sight:Garbage lying uncleared at Silver Beach in Cuddalore.

CUDDALORE:

Silver Beach, a major tourist attraction and recreation centre in Cuddalore town, has virtually run into weeds. It presents an unseemly sight because the entire stretch of the beach is covered with uncleared garbage and the resultant stench.

Discarded multi-hued plastic covers are blown all over, spoiling the landscape. A part of the cement pathway leading to the beach front is damaged, obstructing free movement.
A few garbage bins put up along the pathway are overflowing and often found tilted, spilling the contents. The people who throng in the thousands during weekends are cringing from squatting on the sands because of the revolting environs. Children attempting to build sand structures are a rare occurrence on the beach because they are averse to work on the dirty sand. People from far-off places are hesitant to spread out bedsheets or towels to enjoy snacks because to their consternation they cannot find any clean stretch. Abdul Nazer and his family, who had come from Panruti, said that immediately after the 2004 tsunami they visited the ravaged beach. It evoked a sense of awe over the cataclysmic effects of the natural disaster.

But the present appearance of the beach made them feel sad because the cleaning up of the sands seemed to be nobody's business. They found rags and pieces of torn papers buried in the sands, which created resentment among the visitors. K. Meera from Vriddhachalam, who was with her four-year-old daughter on a swing at the children's park near the beach, said that the upkeep of the beach left much to be desired. The play things were in various stages of damage and could harm children. It was the common view of the beach-goers that Silver Beach, once the pride of Cuddalore, had now become an eye sore.
A row of cement benches and medium-mast lamps installed on the beach post-tsunami disappeared discreetly. The boat house, constructed and re-constructed (post-tsunami) at huge costs, is now in a shambles, thereby robbing the tourists of the delight of a joy boat ride. Cuddalore Municipal Commissioner T. Kumar said that as the visitors' turnout had increased manifold during vacation he had proposed to deploy more conservancy staff to clean up the beach. It was proposed to refurbish the children's park there at a cost of Rs.30 lakh, for which the tender was already floated. The joy boat ride had to be stopped because the ‘uppanar' had dried up and would require the expertise of the Port Trust to revive it.
