Fishermen briefed about coastal security measures

CUDDALORE:

A-member team from the Navy, led by Lieutenant Colonel Kiranjoi, conducted “coastal security awareness camps” at the villages of Nallavadu and Thazhanguda on Tuesday.

According to T.Vasanthan, Inspector, Tamil Nadu Coastal Security Group, Cuddalore unit, the Navy personnel demonstrated through a slideshow how terrorists carried out the Mumbai attack by choosing the sea route and how coastal areas could be protected.

They also distributed pamphlets containing details of precautionary measures to be taken in case of exigency and contact numbers of Navy officers.Whenever fishermen sensed trouble, they should stay together and get in touch with authorities over the toll-free number 1093.The personnel also impressed upon the fishermen the need to carry identity proof with photographs and registration certificates of fishing vessels. These were necessary to isolate any strangers or outside elements. The long coastline of the country could be well protected with the cooperation of fishermen because they had a vast area to operate upon and, moreover, they had wide contacts with their counterparts elsewhere.Mr. Vasanthan said that fishermen should compulsorily carry photo identity cards, just as they carried diesel, water and food in their boats. It was sufficient if they carried photocopies of documents. The copies could be laminated to protect them from getting wet.The fishermen should also carry life jackets to ensure personal safety and make it a point not to cross the International Maritime Boundary Line. They were also asked not to go anywhere near important and sensitive installations, just as in Kalpakkam and where offshore oil rigs had been put up.
