Failure did not deter this IFS aspirant

CUDDALORE:

            C. Ramkumar (26) of Aruljothi Nagar in Panruti taluk has made it in the civil services examinations in the fourth attempt. Having scored 130th rank, he aspires to join the Indian Foreign Service.

Mr. Ramkumar told The Hindu that in the globalised scenario the role of diplomats was crucial. Since the Asian countries — mostly India and China — had come to occupy a predominant position at the international level, it had become important to establish cordial ties among them. He further said that given a chance he would like to be posted in China because its growth had a direct impact on India too. Born as the first son to Chakravarthi (50), Village Administrative Officer in Koliyanur, and Santhi, Mr. Ramkumar nurtured the ambition of becoming a top government official.

He completed his elementary education, up to Standard VII, in Jayaganapathi Matriculation School at Villupuram and later switched to John Dewey Matriculation Higher Secondary School to complete his schooling. In the Plus-Two examinations held in 2001, Mr. Ramkumar emerged a top scorer in Panruti taluk and, on the strength of his marks, got admission to B.Tech in chemical engineering at Anna University, Chennai. He got selected in the campus interview and took up a job in a private chemical concern in Mumbai. But after serving in the company for one-and-a-half years, Mr. Ramkumar resigned to pursue his dream of clearing the civil services examinations.

However, in his maiden attempt in 2006 when he took the UPSC examinations at Puducherry, Mr. Ramkumar fumbled and did not even get through the preliminary examinations. The failure did not deter him but fired the zeal in him to prepare vigorously. He underwent training at a coaching centre in New Delhi for a few months. Meanwhile, he got through Group I services examinations in 2007 and became an Assistant Commissioner of Commercial Tax Department in Chennai. He continued to study on his own and cleared the UPSC preliminary and main examinations in the successive years of 2007-08 and 2008-09 but could not make it at the interview. Finally, in the fourth attempt in 2009-10, he emerged successful. His father, Mr. Chakravarthi, said that his determination and the tenacity to overcome the hurdles had brought him the success.
