Rs. 1.13-crore compensation for fishermen families

Cuddalore Collector P. Seetharaman giving away compensation to fishermen in Cuddalore on Monday.

CUDDALORE:

The State government has sanctioned over Rs. 1.13 crore as compensation to fishermen for the fishing holiday period, Collector P. Seetharaman has said.

Disbursing assistance to a batch of fishermen here on Monday, he said that as per the Tamil Nadu Fishing Regulation Act 1983, ban on fishing was being imposed every year from April 15 to May 29. As it happened to be the breeding season, motorised boats and trawlers were not allowed to go for fishing during the period. This was in practice for the past nine years, he said.

However, considering the fact that fishermen would be affected owing to the fishing holiday, the government had made it a point to adequately compensate them. The assistance was given to the families on the basis of ration cards. For the previous season, the government paid a total aid of Rs. 68,12,500 to 13,625 fishermen families at the rate of Rs. 500 each in the district. For the current season, the monetary assistance was enhanced to Rs. 800, and a total of 14,160 families would be benefited.

Mr. Seetharaman said that benefit would reach all the families soon.He also gave away a cheque for Rs. 1,02,500 each to two fishermen families who lost their breadwinners in accidents.
